This Knowledgebase article explains the available options for downloads on the Neverfail Extranet for 32- and 64-bit Operating Systems.
The servers and PCs on which Neverfail’s software operates may have 32- or 64-bit processors. On computers with 64-bit processors, you might use 64-bit Windows x64 Operating Systems OR 32-bit Windows Operating Systems. Neverfail operates on all these combinations.
In general, with simple application software, the executables built to operate on 32-bit Operating Systems will also work on 64-bit Operating Systems. However, executables built to operate on Windows x64 Operating Systems will not operate on 32-bit Operating Systems. However, this general rule only applies to simple application software; the situation with Neverfail’s sophisticated system software is a little more complex.
What you need to download from the Neverfail Extranet
There are separate 64-bit and 32-bit versions of Neverfail Heartbeat. You must use the appropriate version for the type of the Operating System you are using both for the Server and for the computer running the Management User Interface. For example, if you have Neverfail protecting a pair of Servers using Windows 64-bit Operating System but you are using a 32-bit Windows XP computer to run the Neverfail Heartbeat Client Tools, you will need to have downloaded both the 64-bit and 32-bit versions of Heartbeat and use the appropriate parts of each. The pair of servers in the protected pair must either both be 32-bit or both be 64-bit.
The above paragraph applies to all versions of Neverfail for Exchange, Neverfail for SQL Server, and Neverfail for File Server prior to V5.2.0 only; when these modules formed part of the Neverfail Heartbeat kit available for download.
The situation with the AM(X)s (Application Modules and Application Module eXtensions) is different. Where possible, a single AM(X) is available, which will install on 32-bit and 64-bit Operating Systems. In cases where the protected application does not permit this, there will be a separate download for 32-bit and 64-bit AM(X)s. As of Neverfail Heartbeat V5.2.0, all application modules are available as separate downloads.
The situation with the SCOPE Collectors is different. The 32-bit SCOPE collectors will run on 64-bit Operating Systems, but cannot accurately interrogate the registry of the 64-bit Operating Systems; they therefore flag an alert. Neverfail therefore recommends that you use the version of the collector (32-bit or 64-bit) that is appropriate to the Operating System on the server being interrogated; if you are not sure whether the server is 32- or 64-bit, run the 32-bit SCOPE Collector to find out.
The situation with the Utilities varies from Utility to Utility.
Selecting items from the Neverfail Extranet
In the Neverfail SCOPE section of the Products / Downloads menu in the Extranet, we show “32-bit” or “64-bit” after the version code.
All the Knowledgebase articles that list the versions of products (those linked from Knowledgebase article #4 - 'Products and Versions') will include a column indicating whether they operate on 32-bit, 64-bit, or both.
Neverfail product licenses obtained via the Neverfail Extranet will operate with either 32-bit or 64-bit Neverfail applications. Neverfail does not make a distinction between 32-bit and 64-bit licenses for Neverfail products.
