Symptoms

The system displays the Error Message: ControllerHandshakeException. Exception in Controller: [U16] Serious configuration mismatch between two servers. Please reconfigure so there is one and only one Primary, and one and only one Active. (ControllerHandshakeException).

Cause

During a switchover, the channel connection failed resulting in two active servers. Alternatively, the channel connection failed resulting in the passive server becoming active; suggesting the active server had failed when in fact it had not.

Note: This is known as a Split-brain syndrome and is common in WAN environments where the WAN is susceptible to network outage, or in a single channel LAN.

Resolution

  1. Determine which server should be active; this is normally the server that was active before the false failover.
  2. Shutdown Neverfail on both servers leaving the application running on the server chosen to remain as active.
  3. The remaining server should be configured as passive with the Server Configuration wizard.
  4. Reboot the now passive server; this is to ensure Exchange services are stopped.
  5. Start Neverfail on the active.

Enhanced functionality will be provided in a future release to minimize the likelihood of this scenario.
