How to Automatically Discover or Move Exchange Log and/or Mailstore Locations

Follow

Summary

This Knowledgebase article provides information about how to automatically discover or move Exchange log and/or mailstore locations.

Please note that there are 2 similar utilities:

  • This one, the Exchange (2000 and 2003) Filter Discovery Utility that is to be run from time to time and is long-term available for download.
  • The Exchange (2007) Filter Discovery Utility, which is only relevant for the 64-bit variant of version 5.1.0 of Neverfail for Exchange. This replaces a component that is part of the version 5.1.0 kit and is/was only available briefly in 2007 during the currency of version 5.1.0.

More Information

This article applies directly to Neverfail for Exchange versions prior to and including V4.3 but can be used for later versions if required. It does not apply to Exchange 2007, which is the 64-bit Exchange; therefore, there are only 32-bit versions of the Utility.

For versions later than V4.3 Neverfail normally recommends uninstalling and reinstalling the application module to rediscover log and/or mailstore locations automatically as this will resolve most issues. For further information on how to re-install an application module (AM), please see Knowledgebase article #508 - ' Uninstalling an application module (Neverfail Heartbeat V4.5 onwards)' .

The latest version of the Exchange Filter Discovery utility is available from:

Warning: This utility must not be used with Microsoft Exchange 2007 64-bit.

Procedure

How to Rediscover Exchange Log and/or Mailstore Locations Automatically

Summary

This may be necessary when:

  • Filter discovery failed at install time. The Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client will not contain any filters on the Data\Configuration tab.
  • There is planned maintenance that involves relocating the logs or mailstores.

To discover Neverfail for Exchange filters manually, download the correct version of the Exchange Filter Discovery Utility from the Utilities section of the products menu of this extranet. Then follow the appropriate instructions. There is a sister article ( Knowledgebase article #901 - 'Versions of the Exchange Filter Discovery Utility') that lists all the versions of the Exchange Filter Discovery Utility.

Filter discovery failed at install time

Common reasons for Filter Discovery failing are:

  • Exchange not running at the time discovery was attempted.
  • Active Directory not visible.
  • Insufficient rights – User account must have Full Exchange Admin rights. To confirm access rights open Exchange System Manager and make sure the logged on user can view the Exchange mailboxes.

Before you can run the filter discovery mechanism:

  1. Shut down Neverfail for Exchange, opting to leave Exchange running.
  2. Run the batch file on the server running Exchange.
  3. Start up Neverfail Heartbeat on the active server; check the new filters are correct.
  4. Start the passive server.
  5. Allow the system to synchronize.

Moving the Microsoft Exchange Log or Database location

This utility can be used in situations where the log and database locations need to be changed. Please note it is imperative that the Passive Server has:

  • Identically labeled drives.
  • Equal or greater than free space to accommodate the new log / database file on the Passive server.
  • Similar spec drives, especially with respect to read / write speed or RAID level.

Moving logs or mailstores in Microsoft Exchange - LAN:

  1. Within the Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client, click Data->Configuration .
  2. Select the Exchange filters that will no longer be valid, e.g. log location, and then delete the filter. Repeat for all applicable filters.
  3. Click Apply .
  4. Shutdown Neverfail Heartbeat opting to leave Exchange running.
  5. Move the Exchange log or mailstores using the Exchange System Manager.
  6. Run the Filter Discovery utility from the command line.
  7. Start up Neverfail on the active server; check that the new filters are correct.
  8. Start up Neverfail on the passive server.
  9. Allow the system to synchronize.
  10. Delete the logs / mailstores from the OLD location on the passive server.

Note: At Step 9 All Microsoft Exchange data will be synchronized, this means the data will exist in the original and new locations providing a backup copy of the data. Ensure you delete the old data at Step 10.

Moving logs or mailstores in Microsoft Exchange - WAN:

Bandwidth is typically much smaller in a WAN. To avoid synchronization overhead, it may be more appropriate to:

  1. Within the Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client, click Data->Configuration .
  2. Select the Exchange filters that will no longer be valid e.g. log location and then delete the filter. Repeat for all applicable filters.
  3. Click Apply .
  4. Shutdown Neverfail Heartbeat opting to leave Exchange running.
  5. Move the Exchange log or mailstores using the Exchange System Manager.
  6. Run the filter discovery utility from the command line on the active server.
  7. Start up Neverfail on the active server; check the new filters are correct.
  8. Using Explorer on the passive server, move the files from the old location to the new location. This may involve creating the directory structure to accommodate the new files.
  9. Startup Neverfail on the passive server
  10. Allow the data to verify.
