Migrating from Windows 2000 to 2003

Care must be taken when performing upgrades to ensure that the OS are identical on each server, this is especially important with Windows 2000 to 2003 because the default windows directories are different on each os; C:\WINNT and C:\Windows respectively.

Clean Primary 2003 Server Install
If a fresh install of Windows 2003 was used on the Primary machine then the Secondary *must* be a fresh Windows 2003 install as well. The Secondary server *can not* be an upgrade.

If the Primary was upgraded from Windows 2000 see next section.

Primary migrated from Windows 2000 & Exchange 2000 -> Windows 2003 & Exchange 2003
If the Primary Server was migrated from Windows 2000 to Windows 2003, or you plan to use this strategy for migrating Windows and Exchange then you must build a Windows 2000 Secondary server and migrate that to 2003 before installing Neverfail Heartbeat.

Note: Do not install Exchange on the Secondary server, and leave in the work group. Please refer to Environmental Prerequistes Documents.

In order to migrate from Windows 2000 & Exchange 2000 to Windows 2003 & Exchange 2003 we recommend you read the following KB from Microsoft http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822942. This document recommeneds the following:

a) Upgrade to Exchange 2003 first.
b) Then upgrade Windows 2000 to 2003.

Failure to follow the Microsoft recommendations *will* cause problems with the Exchange services.

Existing Neverfail Heartbeat Installation

When Neverfail Heartbeat has already been installed we recommend that you follow the Cleanbox Box Install Guide.
