How to Upgrade Exchange from Standard to Enterprise on Neverfail Heartbeat Servers

Summary

This knowledgebase article provides a procedure to upgrade a Neverfail server pair from Exchange Standard to Enterprise. Please consult relevant Microsoft documentation prior to performing the upgrade.


More Information

As with all upgrades and migrations, please make a backup of all Exchange data before attempting to perform the upgrade. A copy of this procedure can be downloaded by clicking on Td-NFFE - Upgrading Exchange from Standard to Enterprise -00.pdf .

Procedure

Exchange 2007 and 2010

Microsoft recommends performing a backup of Exchange data prior to the upgrade.

Server Steps Instructions
Remote GUI / active Server 1. Via the Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client, ensure the Primary server is active and Secondary/Tertiary server(s) are passive– perform a switchover if necessary.
2. Shutdown Neverfail via the Management Client selecting the option to leave protected applications running.
Primary Server 3. Using the exchange Management Shell, enter the Enterprise Product key:

Set-ExchangeServer ExServer01 – ProductKey aaaaa-aaaaa-aaaaa-aaaaa-aaaaa
Where ExServer01 is the name of the server and aaaaa is the characters of the key.
4. Restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service (MSExchangeIS)
5. Start Neverfail Heartbeat and allow a Full System Check.

Exchange 2000 and 2003

This process works for Exchange 2000 and 2003 versions. It is not reversible. This document is not intended for Exchange 2000 to 2003 migration. Please refer to the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article http://support.microsoft.com/?id=170280 . Microsoft recommends performing a backup of Exchange data prior to the upgrade.

Instructions

Remote GUI / active Server

1.

Via the Management Client, ensure the Primary server is active – switchover if necessary.

2.

Shutdown Neverfail via the Management Client selecting the option to leave protected applications running.

Both Servers

3.

Set Neverfail Heartbeat service to manual via the SCM.

Primary Server

4.

Insert Exchange Enterprise CD and run setup.exe.

5.

Select Re-Install for all components. Complete the wizard.

6.

Check that all Exchange services are set to 'Manual' at startup.

7.

Start Neverfail Heartbeat and confirm all Exchange services are started.

8.

Via Exchange System Manager, mount all the mailstores if necessary.

Secondary Server

9.

Start the Neverfail service.

Primary Server

10.

Check the servers have connected and started replication. Wait for the servers to synchronize.

11.

Switchover so that the Secondary server is active. Exit the Management Client.

Secondary Server

12.

Start the Management Client and shutdown Neverfail, selecting the option to leave protected applications running .

13.

Insert Exchange Enterprise CD and run the setup.exe to start the Exchange 2003 install wizard.

14.

Ensure all components are selected for Re-Install including Management Tools and complete the wizard.

15.

Via the Service Control Manager check all Exchange services are set to 'Manual' at startup.

16.

Start Neverfail Heartbeat and set the service to 'Automatic'.

17.

Via Exchange System Manager mount all the mailstores.

Primary Server

18.

Set Neverfail Heartbeat service to 'Automatic' and then start the service.

19.

Allow to sync and verify then switchback so that the Primary is active,
