This Knowledgebase article explains the protection offered by the Neverfail for Exchange Application Module. x86 platform (32-bit hardware) – Exchange 2000, Exchange 2003

Neverfail for Exchange proactively monitors your Microsoft Exchange environment. The AM(X) protects all the Exchange related services, configuration information, and the Exchange mailstores and logs discovered at install time. Neverfail for Exchange also supports native Exchange Journaling. Please note it does not protect services used for Exchange 5.5 compatibility.

Protected Services

This is a list of all services protected by this AM(X). Please note that where an AM(X) supports multiple vendor versions, some services may not be present in a particular version.

  • IIS Admin Service (IISAdmin)
  • Microsoft Exchange System Attendant (MSExchangeSA)
  • Microsoft POP3 Service (pop3svc)
  • Microsoft Exchange IMAP4 service (IMAP4SVC)
  • Microsoft Exchange Routing Engine (RESvc)
  • Simple Mail Transport Protocol (smtpsvc)
  • Microsoft Exchange Information Store service (MSExchangeIS)
  • Microsoft Exchange Management (MSExchangeMGMT)
  • Microsoft Message Transfer Agent (MSExchangeMTA)
  • Task Scheduler (schedule)
  • Network News Transfer Protocol (nntpsvc)
  • World Wide Web Publishing Service (w3svc)
  • Microsoft Exchange Event (MSEXchangeES)

When the AM(X) is installed, all protected services will be set to manual unless otherwise stated.

Protected Data

This is a description of the protected data set that was determined at AM(X) install time. Please note that exact filters will be based on the configuration of the application at the moment that the AM(X) was installed.

  • All registry data and configuration information
  • All the Exchange mailstores and Exchange logs discovered at install time

Automatic Filter Discovery

The AM(X) does not provide an automatic filter discovery component during normal operation. Knowledgebase article #242 - 'How to automatically discover or move Exchange log and/or mailstore locations' provides details on how to use a command line utility for automated discovery of the new locations of the Exchange mailstores and/or logs in case their location has been changed or new mailstores have been created.

Unsupported Components or Features

The AM(X) does not protect the following application features or components:

  • Index store database - Please refer to Kb article 228 for more information.
  • Services for Exchange 5.5 compatibility.
  • For protecting the IIS Websites, Neverfail for IIS Server should be installed.

x64 platform (64-bit hardware) – Exchange 2007 to Include SP1

Note: The IA-64 Itanium platform is not supported.

Neverfail for Exchange proactively monitors your Microsoft Exchange environment. The AM(X) protects all the Exchange related services, configuration information, and the Exchange mailstores and logs (if installed on the Mailbox Exchange server), based on the current role of the protected Exchange server in the implemented Exchange architecture.

The following Exchange server roles can be protected by this AM(X):

  • Edge Transport role
  • Hub Transport role
  • Client Access role
  • Mailbox role
  • Unified Messaging role

If a single server is serving all the roles, the AM(X) offers complete protection for all of them.

Automatic Filter Discovery

The Neverfail for Exchange on 64-bit does offer Automatic Filter Discovery during normal operation. The Automatic Filter Discovery runs every 2 minutes through the Application Manager’s monitor script.

  • The AM will automatically protect newly created mailstores and their correspondent log locations.
  • The AM will automatically update the mailstores and log locations, in case they are moved.

Unsupported Components or Features

The AM(X) does not protect the following application features or components:

  • For protecting the IIS Websites, Neverfail for IIS Server should be installed.
  • The Microsoft Exchange Speech Engine (MSS) is not protected by default. For more information on adding protection for the Microsoft Exchange Speech Engine, please refer to Knowledgebase article #1129 - 'Neverfail for Exchange V5.1.0 does NOT protect Microsoft Speech Engine by default'.
