Summary

This Knowledgebase article provides information about how to change the Neverfail Channel IP address(es), when Neverfail is installed on a server trio.

More Information

There may be occasions where it is necessary to change the channel IP address(es) on a Neverfail server trio.  Neverfail can accommodate the requirement with some minor configuration changes.

Procedure

To change the Neverfail Channel IP address on a Neverfail server trio, follow the steps below:

The following steps assume the server pair is configured with the Primary server as active, the Secondary server as first passive and the Tertiary server as second passive.

  1. Stop Neverfail Heartbeat (on all servers) leaving the protected applications running.
  2. Change the necessary Channel IP address(es) on Primary, Secondary and/or Tertiary in the network properties making sure that each new Channel IP address is set in a different subnet class than the principal (public) addresses. If the principal (public) and channel connection are in the same subnet, please see Knowledgebase article #466 - How to Create a Static Route for the Neverfail Channel Connection Where the Channel and Principal (Public) IP Addresses Are on the Same Subnet in a WAN Environment.
  3. Open the Server Configuration wizard on the Primary server and click on the Channel tab.

  4. Edit the necessary channel IP address(es). The Primary server channel IP can be selected from the drop down box. The Secondary or Tertiary server channel IP address need to be filled in manually, ensuring to press ENTER once the IP address of the Secondary / Tertiary server is correct. Click Finish . Note: If you do not press ENTER , the changes will not be stored.
  5. Open the Server Configuration wizard on the Secondary server and go to the Channel tab.
  6. Edit the necessary channel IP address(es) for the Secondary server. Select the Secondary server channel IP address from the drop down box. The Primary and Tertiary server channel IP address need to be filled in manually. Click Finish when done.
  7. Open the Server Configuration wizard on the Tertiary server and go to the Channel tab.
  8. Edit the necessary channel IP address(es) for the Tertiary server. Select the Tertiary server channel IP address from the drop down box. The Primary and Secondary server channel IP address need to be filles in manually. Click Finish when done.
  9. Start Neverfail Heartbeat on the Tertiary (second passive) server.
  10. Start Neverfail Heartbeat on the Secondary (first passive) server.
  11. Start Neverfail Heartbeat on the Primary (active) server and allow servers to resync.

Note:

For the changes to be stored after the restart of Heartbeat, ALL three servers have to connect and start replicating.

Caution should be taken when modifying the Channel IP addresses for the First Passive – Second Passive connection. The IP settings for this connection are not present in the Server Configuration on the active server; therefore, if the second passive server does not connect with the other two servers after restarting Neverfail Heartbeat, the new Channel IP settings will not be saved.
