Upgrading Microsoft SQL Server 2000 with Service Pack 4

Follow

Note: According to Microsoft problems may occur if the SQL Server services are not stopped during SP4 deployment. Microsoft advises stopping all SQL Server services prior to installing SP4. If these are not stopped, a reboot may be required. If the services are stopped then a reboot is not required after applying the SP4.

For further information please consult the appropriate Microsoft documentation. http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/b/d/1bdf5b78-584e-4de0-b36f-c44e06b0d2a3/ReadmeSql2k32sp4.htm#_stop_services_and_applications_before_running_sp4_setup

Procedure for upgrading to Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4

This procedure assumes that the Primary server is ACTIVE, and the Secondary server is PASSIVE.  If the Secondary server is active, please omit step 2 below.

1. Open the Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client

2. Perform a switchover so that the Secondary server will become Active

3. Using Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client shutdown Neverfail Heartbeat choosing to stop the protected application after switchover is complete

On the Secondary:

4. Install SQLServer2000 SP4 on the Secondary/Active server. Do not reboot the server if asked to do so.

5. Launch the Configure Server Wizard

6. Change the server role to Secondary PASSIVE

Note: If you were prompted to reboot the server at Step 4 (above) do so now then continue.

7. Via the Windows Service Control Manager, start the Neverfail Server R2 service on the Secondary Server (Neverfail Packet Filter will hide the identity of the server)

8. Please allow the service to become fully functional (use the Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client to check the server status – it should be Passive and Replicating)

9. Via the Windows Service Control Manager, stop the Neverfail Server R2 service on the Secondary Server

On the Primary:

10.  Launch the Configure Server Wizard

11. Change the server role to Primary ACTIVE

12. Start Neverfail Heartbeat

13. Using Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client shutdown Neverfail Heartbeat choosing to stop the protected application

14. Install SQLServer2000 SP4 on the Primary/Active server. Do not reboot the server if asked to do so.

15. Start Neverfail Heartbeat on the Secondary server

Note: If you were prompted to reboot the server at Step 14 (above) do so now then continue.

16. Start Neverfail Heartbeat on the Primary server

17. Open the Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client and check that the system completes a Full System Check.

It is advisable to perform a switchover to check the Secondary server availability followed by a switchback after the Full System Check is finished.
