This Knowledgebase article provides information about how removing or changing a NIC in the Primary or Secondary server can cause problems for the continued operation of the Neverfail Packet Filter Driver.

More Information

Removing or changing a NIC in the Primary or Secondary server can cause problems for the continued operation of the Neverfail Packet Filter Driver if the correct procedures are not followed. Adding additional NICs does not cause any problems.

Procedure

Note: The procedure used in this article to install and uninstall the Neverfail Packet Filter Driver applies to versions prior to V5.0.1. For Neverfail Heartbeat V5.0.1 and later please consult Knowledgebase article #128 - 'nfpktfltr command-line options' for the correct procedure used for installing and uninstalling the Neverfail Packet Filter Driver (nfpktfltr). Please check with your Neverfail Support representative if you are unsure about any of the instructions provided below before proceeding.

Follow the steps below:

  1. Stop Neverfail Heartbeat on the machine on which the modification is to take place.
  2. Before a NIC is replaced or removed, the Neverfail Packet Filter Driver (nfpktfltr) must be uninstalled. To uninstall nfpktfltr, perform the following command in the Neverfail Heartbeat installation directory;

    C:\install dir>bin\nfpktfltr uninstall

  3. Restart the server.

    Note: Care should be taken at this point if the server was passive before uninstalling the packet filter, as the IP address is no longer filtered.

    Replace or remove the desired NICs.

  4. When the network reconfiguration is complete, nfpktfltr must be reinstalled. To reinstall nfpktfltr perform the following command in the Neverfail Heartbeat installation directory;

    C:\<install dir>r2\bin\nfpktfltr install c:\neverfail\r2\nfpktfltr

    For additional information, see Knowledgebase article #353 - 'How to manually install and uninstall the Neverfail Packet Filter Driver'.

  5. Before you can restart Neverfail Heartbeat, it may be necessary to acquire a new license key, if the old one is no longer valid. A new license key can be requested via the Neverfail extranet.
