Obsolete: How to change the location of the Neverfail Heartbeat Interceptor page file (NFPAGFIL.SYS)

Follow

Note: This article only applies to Neverfail Heartbeat versions prior to V4.4

There are two ways to change the location of the Neverfail Heartbeat Interceptor page file (NFPAGFIL.SYS)

A) Using the nfclient tool:

To reconfigure the location of NFPAGFIL.SYS via the nfclient tool, the
Neverfail Heartbeat services must be running, but replication must
be stopped. You can leave the protected application running when you
stop Neverfail Heartbeat replication, in which case protected files
will be re-synchronized when replication is restarted.

- Start the Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client from the Neverfail Heartbeat System
Tray icon (Right-click > Manage Server...) or from
Start > Programs > Neverfail > Manage Server
- On the System > Status & Control panel, click on the
'Stop Replicating' button.
- If you want to leave the protected applications running,
choose 'Stop Neverfail Heartbeat but leave protected applications
running.'

You can now reconfigure the location of NFPAGFIL.SYS:

- On the Active server, run ...\R2\bin\nfclient.exe
- Get the Interceptor Buffer property:
> getp Interceptor
This returns all the settable properties for the Interceptor
component. The Buffer configuration is a set of 5 parameters:
ChunkSize, ChunkTimeout, ChunkSpares, PagedFileSize, and
PagedFileName.
- Make a note of the original values of these 5 parameters.
- All 5 parameters must be set at once using the following command:
> setp Interceptor Buffer "a b c d e"
where a is the new value for ChunkSize,
b is the new value for ChunkTimeout,
c is the new value for ChunkSpares,
d is the new value for PagedFileSize,
and e is the new value for PagedFileName.
Use the EXISTING values for ChunkSize, ChunkTimeout, ChunkSpares
and PagedFileSize, and supply the NEW value for PagedFileName, which
will change the location of the file to the path you specify.
For example:
> setp Interceptor Buffer "65536 100 16 268435456 d:\\nfpagfil.sys"
(Note: the command syntax is case-sensitive; and you MUST use
double slashes for all directory separators in the file name.)
- After setting the value, check it by getting the Interceptor
properties again and making sure that all the other parameters
have their original values.

On the System > Status & Control panel of the Neverfail Heartbeat
Management Client, click the 'Start Replicating' button. This will
restart Neverfail Heartbeat replication.

B) Setting the PageFileName value in the Windows Registry.

To reconfigure the location of NFPAGFIL.SYS via the Registry tool, the
Neverfail Heartbeat services must be shut down. You can leave the
protected application running when you shut down Neverfail Heartbeat,
in which case protected files will be re-synchronized when Heartbeat
is restarted.

- Start the Management Client from the Neverfail Heartbeat System
Tray icon (Right-click > Manage Server...) or from
Start > Programs > Neverfail > Manage Server
- On the System > Status & Control panel, click on the
'Shutdown' button.
- If you want to leave the protected applications running,
choose 'Exit Neverfail Heartbeat but leave protected applications
running.'

You can now edit the Registry:

- Run regedit
- Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\prefs\Neverfail\current
- Navigate to \Interceptor\Buffer
- Click on /Paged/File/Name and edit the value.
NOTE: Every uppercase letter in the value is preceded by a "/",
so the default value looks like this:
/C:///N/F/P/A/G/F/I/L./S/Y/S

Now restart Neverfail Heartbeat via the Neverfail Heartbeat
System Tray icon (Right-click > Start Neverfail Heartbeat). Start the
Passive server first, then the Active server.
