This Knowledgebase article provides information about how to recover from a failed Neverfail installation.


More Information

This procedure covers the following situations:

  1. Recovery from a failed install at a customer site.
  2. Rebuilding a dead server after catastrophic failure.

Note: In the event of 2. above, it may be the Primary server that is being rebuilt. If that is the case then substitute the server that is currently active, where references are made to the Primary server in the table, and substitute the server which failed, where references are made to the Secondary server.

Analysis of problem

If you are recovering a server which failed at run-time, triggering a failover, you should attempt to identify and rectify the cause of the failure before proceeding.

OR

If you are dealing with a failed install, you should attempt to identify and rectify the cause of the failure before repeating the install, using  the following checklist as a guide:

q What component failed to install?

q What step actually failed?

q Was there an error message?

q Did something unexpected happen?

q Was the wrong information supplied?

q Locate relevant KB Articles / contact support

Shutdown Neverfail Heartbeat, leaving the protected application running.

Reset all required services to automatic.

q

Uninstall the Application Module for Protected Application, if it was installed e.g. Start -> Programs -> Neverfail -> Uninstall Application Module for Exchange .

Uninstall the Neverfail Heartbeat component, if it was installed ( Start - > Programs -> Neverfail -> Uninstall Neverfail Heartbeat ).

If either exists, delete C:\NFInstallTemp and the contents of the Neverfail Heartbeat program files directory (C:\Neverfail, by default).

Clear the Windows Application and System event logs, saving them to disk as .csv files.

Reboot and confirm all services have started, and that no errors are reported.

Secondary

Had the restore from NF.bkf on the Secondary server begun / completed?

q

Yes

q Rebuild server secondary server from Ghost image OR reinstall OS plus additional components & service packs. q Check all installation steps which relate to the Secondary server.
q Reconnect network leads. q Delete NF.bkf file, if present

q

No.

No action required.

Primary

Proceed with the install only if everything is OK.
