Upgrading Microsoft Exchange 2000 to Microsoft Exchange 2003 on a Neverfail Heartbeat Server pair.

Summary

This Knowledge Base article explains how to upgrade Microsoft Exchange 2000 to Microsoft Exchange 2003 when Neverfail Heartbeat is already installed on your server pair. It does not cover the migration of the operating system to Windows 2003. The documented procedure applies to all version of Neverfail for Exchange.

Note: This article does not apply to Neverfail for Exchange versions prior to V4.1


More information

This procedure assumes that the Primary server is ACTIVE, and the Secondary server is PASSIVE.

On the Primary Server
1. Open the Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client. Shutdown Neverfail Heartbeat selecting the option to ‘Exit Neverfail Heartbeat but leave protected applications running’.
2. Open the Windows Service Control Manager (SCM) and check that the status for the Neverfail Server R2 service is ‘Stopped’.  Set the Startup Type to ‘Manual’.
3. Upgrade the server to Microsoft Exchange 2003 using the Microsoft Exchange 2003 CD. Ensure all options are set to upgrade including Management Tools.
4. Errors may be reported when the Search service is upgraded, this is acceptable.
5. In the SCM, check that all the Microsoft Exchange services are ‘Started/Manual’.
6. Start Neverfail Heartbeat via the SCM or the Neverfail System Tray icon.
7. Open the Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client.  On the System > Status and Control panel, check that the Application Status is 'Started'.
8. Open Exchange System Manager and mount all the mail stores if necessary.
9. Shutdown Neverfail Heartbeat selecting the option to ‘Exit Neverfail Heartbeat and stop all protected applications”.
10. Launch the Neverfail Heartbeat Configure Server Wizard and change the Primary server’s role to ‘passive’.
11. Reboot the server. NOTE: Microsoft Exchange will not start as the server is passive and Neverfail service is manual at startup.


On the Secondary Server
12. Launch the Neverfail Heartbeat Configure Server Wizard and change the Secondary server’s role to ‘active’.
13. Open a Windows Command Prompt
C:\> cd Neverfail\r2\bin
C:\> nfpktfltr enable
14. Log off from Windows. Log on again using the same credentials.
15. Upgrade the server to Exchange 2003 using the Microsoft Exchange 2003 CD. Ensure all options are set to upgrade including Management Tools.
16. Errors may be reported when the Search service is upgraded, this is acceptable.
17. Start Neverfail Heartbeat via the SCM or the Neverfail System Tray icon.
18. In the SCM, check that all the Exchange services are ‘Started/Manual’.
19. In the SCM, change the Startup Type for Neverfail Server R2 service to ‘Automatic’.
20. Open the Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client. Shutdown Neverfail Heartbeat selecting the option to ‘Exit Neverfail Heartbeat and stop all protected applications”.
21. Launch the Neverfail Heartbeat Configure Server Wizard and change the Secondary server’s role to ‘passive’.
22. Reboot the server.

On the Primary Server
23. Launch the Neverfail Heartbeat Configure Server Wizard and change the Primary server’s role to ‘active’.
24. Start Neverfail Heartbeat via the SCM or the Neverfail System Tray icon.
25. In the SCM, change the Startup Type for Neverfail Server R2 service to ‘Automatic’.
26. When Microsoft Exchange has started open Exchange System Manager
- Mount the mailboxes
- Uncheck ‘Do not mount the mailbox at startup’ property.
27. Check that the Full System Check completes successfully.  This can be verified using the Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client.
