How to Set Up Perfmon Counters

Procedure

  1. Click START , click RUN and enter 'perfmon', click OK
  2. In the tree at the left hand side, open ‘Performance logs and alerts’ and select ‘Counter logs’
  3. Right-click on the 'Counter Logs' and select ‘New logs settings’
  4. When prompted, give a name to the new log, use an easy identifiable name like ‘Neverfail’.
  5. In the new dialog, note the path and name of the log file.
  6. Click Add Counters
  7. Select ‘Use local computer counters’
  8. For each of the following objects, collect the specified counters:

    Performance Object: Processor
    Counters: All Counters
    Instances: All instances
    Click Add

    Performance Object: PhysicalDisk
    Counters: %Disk Time, % Disk Read Time, % Disk Write Time, Disk Read Bytes/sec, Disk Write Bytes/sec, %Idle Time, Average Disk Queue Length
    Instances: All instances
    Click Add

    Performance Object: LogicalDisk
    Counters: %Disk Time, % Disk Read Time, % Disk Write Time, Disk Read Bytes/sec, Disk Write Bytes/sec, %Idle Time
    Instances: All instances
    Click Add

    Performance Object: Network interface
    Counters: Bytes Received/sec, Bytes Sent/sec
    Instances: All instances
    Click Add

    Performance Object: Paging File
    Counters: All counters
    Instances: All instances
    Click Add

    Performance Object: Memory
    Counters: All counters
    Click Add

  9. Close the ‘Add Counters Dialog’ to return to the LogFile dialog (it will be titled the name chosen in Step 4)
  10. Set the Interval to 3 minutes
  11. On the ‘Log Files’ tab select Log file type to be Text File (Comma delimited)
  12. On the ‘Schedule’ tab, set it to Stop logs after ‘1 Day’
  13. Click OK and the logs will begin immediately. You can exit perfmon and even log out, the collection will continue for 1 day.
