Summary

This Knowledgebase article describes the procedure for applying Microsoft Daylight Saving Time (DST) updates on machines running Neverfail Heartbeat or the Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client.

More Information

In the spring of 2007, the start dates and the end dates for Daylight Saving Time (DST) in the United States will change to comply with the Energy Policy Act of 2005. The dates will change as follows:

DST In 2007 In previous years
Start date
Second Sunday in March, 2:00 A.M. First Sunday in April, 2:00 A.M.
End date First Sunday in November, 2:00 A.M. Last Sunday in October, 2:00 A.M.

Procedure

As a result, Microsoft has issued a number of patches and tools to correctly reference DST changes. The sections below detail the procedure to follow when using the Microsoft patches and tools on machines running Neverfail Heartbeat.

Section 1: How to update the operating system with Microsoft DST updates on a server pair running Neverfail Heartbeat

Depending on the operating system, Microsoft recommends different methods to update DST. One or more Microsoft DST operating system updates are available for Windows Server 2003 platforms. For Windows 2000 Server, Microsoft offers several ways of updating DST, including running a tool called TZEdit for editing the registry; or, if you have Extended Hotfix Support, an operating system update may also be available.

In order to proceed, you should first identify the recommended Microsoft DST update method for the operating system on your Neverfail Heartbeat server pair.

Next, you need to have a copy of the relevant Microsoft DST updates or tools on your Heartbeat server pair.  These should be copied to both the Primary server and the Secondary server. Once this is done, continue as follows:

  1. Shutdown Neverfail Heartbeat with the Primary server as active and the Secondary server as passive.  Opt to leave the protected applications running.
  2. On the Primary server, apply the DST update method as described by Microsoft and corresponding to the operating system. Verify that the update is installed properly on the Primary server. Do not reboot, even if this is required by the patch installer.
  3. On the Secondary server, apply the same DST update method as in step 2 above. Verify that the update is installed properly on the Secondary server. Do not reboot, even if this is required by the patch installer.
  4. Synchronize the date and time between the Primary and Secondary servers, if necessary.
  5. If a reboot was required after applying the patches, reboot both the Primary and the Secondary server now. If a reboot was not required, start Neverfail Heartbeat on the Primary and Secondary servers.

Applies To:

Windows 2000 Server
Windows Server 2003 x86 editions
Windows Server 2003 x64 editions

Section 2: How to update a server pair running Neverfail for Exchange with the Microsoft DST patch

Two Microsoft updates for Daylight Saving Time (DST) changes in 2007 are now available for computers that are running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2).

Note: Prior to applying this Microsoft patch, please review Microsoft Knowledge Base article #932599 - 'Information Store database does not mount with Event ID 9519 and 9518'.

In order to proceed, you need to have:

  • A copy of the correct Microsoft DST patch for the version of Exchange on your Heartbeat server pair.
  • A copy of the correct Microsoft DST patch for the operating system on your Heartbeat server pair.

The patch install files should be copied to both the Primary server and the Secondary server.

  1. Shutdown Neverfail Heartbeat with the Primary server as active and the Secondary server as passive.  Opt to leave the protected applications running.
  2. On the Primary server, proceed as follows:
    1. Apply the Microsoft DST patch corresponding to the operating system on the Primary server. Verify that the patch is installed properly on the Primary server. Do not reboot, even if this is required by the patch installer
    2. Apply the Microsoft DST patch for Exchange. Verify that the patch is installed properly on the Primary server. Do not reboot, even if this is required by the patch installer
  3. On the Secondary server, proceed as follows:
    1. Apply the Microsoft DST patch corresponding to the operating system on the Secondary server. Verify that the patch is installed properly on the Secondary server. Do not reboot, even if this is required by the patch installer.
    2. Apply the Microsoft DST patch for Exchange. Verify that the patch is installed properly on the Secondary server. Do not reboot, even if this is required by the patch installer.
  4. Synchronize the date and time between the Primary and Secondary servers, if necessary.
  5. If a reboot was required at steps 2 and 3 above, reboot both the Primary and the Secondary server now. If a reboot was not required, start Neverfail Heartbeat on both the Primary and Secondary servers. Make sure the IISAdmin service is stopped on the Secondary/Passive server.
  6. Launch the Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client and confirm that a Full System Check is in progress.

Section 3: How to update a server pair running Neverfail for SharePoint with the Microsoft DST patch for Sharepoint

Microsoft has released an update for Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2.0. This update includes updated time zone definitions for Daylight Saving Time (DST) start dates and end dates for the United States.

In order to proceed, you need to have:

  • A copy of the Microsoft DST patch for SharePoint Services 2.0.

Opt to leave the protected application running.
  2. On the Primary server, proceed as follows:
    1. Apply the Microsoft DST patch corresponding to the operating system on the Primary server. Verify that the patch is installed properly on the Primary server. Do not reboot, even if this is required by the patch installer.
    2. Apply the Microsoft DST patch for SharePoint Services. Verify that the patch is installed properly on the Primary server. Do not reboot, even if this is required by the patch installer.
Note : If it appears, you can safely ignore this Windows Application event: ‘Failed to connect to server: Error: 0x800401F0’.
  3. On the Primary server, open the Windows Service Control Manager and check that all SharePoint services are set to "Manual". For a complete list, refer to Neverfail Application Monitor Configuration GUI.
  4. On the Secondary server, proceed as follows:
    1. Apply the Microsoft DST patch corresponding to the operating system on the Secondary server. Verify that the patch is installed properly on the Secondary server. Do not reboot, even if this is required by the patch installer.
    2. Apply the Microsoft DST patch for SharePoint Services. Verify that the patch is installed properly on the Secondary server. Do not reboot, even if this is required by the patch installer.
Note : If it appears, you can safely ignore this Windows Application event: ‘Failed to connect to server: Error: 0x800401F0’.
  5. On the Secondary server, open the Windows Service Control Manager and check that all SharePoint services are set to "Manual", and are stopped. For a complete list, refer to Neverfail Application Monitor Configuration GUI.
  6. Synchronize the date and time between the Primary and Secondary servers, if necessary.
  7. If reboot was required at steps 2 and 4 above, reboot both the Primary and the Secondary server now. If reboot was not required, start Neverfail Heartbeat on both the Primary and Secondary servers. Make sure the IISAdmin service is stopped on the Secondary/Passive server.
  8. Launch the Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client and confirm that a Full System Check is in progress.
