How to Determine and Configure Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2010 Physical Memory Utilization

Follow

Summary

This Knowledgebase article provides information about how to limit Microsoft Exchange 2007 physical memory utilization.

More Information

Microsoft Exchange 2010

Microsoft Exchange 2010 does not have a preset maximum size for the Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) database cache. If memory is needed and it is available on the system, Exchange 2010 will use all available memory for its processes leaving Neverfail Heartbeat and its components without physical memory.

Neverfail recommends that at least 512 MB of physical memory is available for Neverfail processes and components for fast and reliable operations.

Please refer to Microsoft KB article http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee832793.aspx for information about how to identify Exchange 2010 memory requirements. Refer to Microsoft KB http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2009/11/09/3408737.aspx for assistance in determining the Mailbox server role and calculating memory requirements or leverage the Exchange 2010 Mailbox Server Role Requirements Calculator listed in Microsoft KB http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2009/11/09/3408737.aspx .

If difficulties are encountered calculating memory requirements, please consult Neverfail Technical Support for further assistance.

Microsoft Exchange 2007

Microsoft Exchange 2007 does not have a preset maximum size for the Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) database cache. If memory is needed and it is available on the system, Exchange 2007 will use all available memory for its processes leaving Neverfail Heartbeat and its components without physical memory.

Neverfail recommends that at least 512 MB of physical memory is available for Neverfail processes and components for fast and reliable operations. Please refer to Microsoft KB article http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb691304(EXCHG.80).aspx for information about how to set a threshold for Exchange 2007 memory consumption. Setting a proper threshold for Exchange 2007 memory consumption will ensure Neverfail Heartbeat components have fast access to the server physical memory resources.

Additionally, Microsoft has recognized this issue and provided a hotfix to address the issue. Please see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942027 to obtain the hotfix.

If difficulties are encountered setting the upper limit for Exchange 2007 memory usage, please consult Neverfail Technical Support for further assistance.
