About the Neverfail ClusterProtector Plug-in

Neverfail ClusterProtector is comprised of two components; the Neverfail ClusterProtector Plug-in and the documentation provided to customize the configuration for specific applications running on the Microsoft Cluster detailed in the Supported Versions.

Windows Server Failover Clustering provides High Availability for the application while the function of Neverfail ClusterProtector is to provide Disaster Recovery for the Microsoft Cluster. The ClusterProtector plug-in does not provide the same set of functionality as a standard Neverfail plug-in.

Supported Versions

The following applications are supported in respect to the hardware platform:

x86 Platform (32-bit hardware)

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 on Windows Server 2008

x64 Platform (64-bit hardware)

  • Microsoft Exchange 2007 and 2007 SP3 CCR/SSC on Windows Server 2008
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005, 2008, and 2008 R2 on Windows Server 2008

Neverfail ClusterProtector Behavior

Neverfail ClusterProtector operation behavior for the Resource Group Move, Neverfail Switch, and Cluster Failure are described in Knowledgebase article #1456 - 'Overview - Operational Behavior of Neverfail ClusterProtector.

Additionally, details on recovering from a Cluster Failure are described in Knowledgebase article #1457 - 'How to Recover from a Failed Cluster'.

Install/Uninstall the Plug-in for Neverfail ClusterProtector

To install the Neverfail ClusterProtector Plug-in following the instructions provided in the application specific document. For Microsoft SQL Server 2005, please see Neverfail ClusterProtector Installation Guide for SQL Server 2005 on Windows 2008 and for Microsoft Exchange 2007 on Windows 2008 please refer to Neverfail ClusterProtector Installation Guide for Exchange 2007 CCR/SSC on Windows Server 2008 .

Subsequent installations/reinstallations can be performed using Application -> Plugins in the Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client using the procedure below.

To reinstall Neverfail ClusterProtector Plug-in, follow the steps below:

  1. Unzip the Neverfail ClusterProtector Plug-in to the desired location.
  2. Launch the Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client.
  3. Navigate to Application -> Plugins .
  4. Click on the Install button.
  5. Click the Browse button and navigate to the location of the 'ClusterProtectorNFPlugin.dll' file.
  6. Click OK to complete the installation.

To remove/uninstall the Neverfail ClusterProtector Plug-in, follow the steps below:

  1. Launch the Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client.
  2. Navigate to Application -> Plugins .
  3. Select the desired plug-in to be removed/uninstalled.
  4. Click on the Uninstall button in the 'Plugins' pane.
  5. When the plug-in is uninstalled, the files are not removed.  This is by design for future functionality and therefore the following workaround is provided:
    1. Copy the contents of the r2\plugins\<sponsor>\<version> folder to a different location (e.g. C:\temp).
    2. Delete the contents of the r2\plugins\<sponsor>\<version> folder.
    3. To reinstall the plug-in, when prompted for the location of the plug-in files, navigate to the new folder location (e.g. C:\temp).

Note: As an alternative, reinstallation can be accomplished by using the download files from the original download location after removing the plug-in.

Protected Services

  • The services stopped and started by Neverfail ClusterProtector Plug-in will depend upon the application being protected, please refer to the appropriate Neverfail ClusterProtector install document.

Protected Data

  • Filters for the data stored on the shared storage will be configured manually at install time; details are provided within the application specific Neverfail ClusterProtector install document.
