This Knowledgebase article provides information about how to use 'Exclusion Filters' to exclude reparse points in shared folders.
On Neverfail for File Server installations on Windows Server 2008, during the installation, the user is given the option to share the 'Public' folder when setting up the fileserver. Typically, the 'Public' folder contains reparse points. T he current release Neverfail Heartbeat does not support protection of reparse points. If there are reparse points in the set of files covered by an Inclusion Filter then they should be removed from the protected set using Exclusion Filters.
For example, on Windows 2008 there are typically a number of reparse points in the folder 'C:\Users\Public\Documents'. You can see these reparse points using the command “DIR /A C:\Users\Public\Documents” from the command line. If you have an Inclusion Filter such as “C:\Users\Public\**”, then these reparse points will cause Heartbeat to stop replicating. You can remove them from the protected set by adding the following Exclusion Filters using the Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client and following the procedure below:
To avoid reparse points and prevent replication from being stopped, exclude all folders with reparse points and those with the target of the reparse point not covered by an 'Inclusion Filter' using the procedure below:
- Launch the Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client.
- Click on the Data button and then select the 'Configuration' tab.
- Click on the Add Exclusion Filter button.
Enter the path to the folder containing reparse points manually as shown below.
Note: Do not use the Browse button to navigate to the folder as this will add wildcard characters (for example C:\USERS\PUBLIC\DOCUMENTS\**) to the path statement preventing the file filter from effectively excluding the folder.
- Click on the OK button.
- Verify that the 'Exclusion Filter' has an 'Effective' state.
- Repeat steps 2-5 for all folders containing reparse points.
