About Plug-in for McAfee GroupShield for Exchange

McAfee GroupShield/Security for Exchange is a mail scanning solution for Microsoft Exchange servers. The plug-in protects all the McAfee services, the registry and the configuration information.

Please take care to distinguish between McAfee GroupShield for Lotus Domino (see Knowledgebase article #1741 - 'Plug-in for McAfee GroupShield for Lotus Domino – Feature List') and Plug-in for McAfee GroupShield for Exchange (this article).

Install/Uninstall the Plug-in for McAfee GroupShield/Security for Exchange Via the Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client

The Plug-in for McAfee GroupShield for Exchange should be initially installed via the Neverfail Setup process. Subsequent installations/reinstallations can be installed using Application -> Plugins in the Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client using the procedure below.

To reinstall the Plug-in for McAfee GroupShield for Exchange, follow the steps below:

  1. Unzip the Plug-in for McAfee GroupShield for Exchange to the desired location.
  2. Launch the Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client.
  3. Navigate to the Applications: Plug-ins tab.
  4. Click on the Install button.
  5. Click the Browse button and navigate to the location of the McAfeeGroupShieldNFPlugin.dll file.
  6. Click OK to complete the installation.

To remove/uninstall the Plug-in for McAfee GroupShield for Exchange, follow the steps below:

  1. Launch the Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client.
  2. Navigate to the Applications: Plug-ins tab.
  3. Select the plug-in to be removed/uninstalled.
  4. Click on the Uninstall button.
  5. When the plug-in is uninstalled, the files are not removed. This is by design for future functionality and therefore the following workaround is provided:
    1. Copy the contents of the r2\plugins\<sponsor>\<version> folder to a different location (e.g. C:\temp ).
    2. Delete the contents of the r2\plugins\<sponsor>\<version> folder.
    3. To reinstall the plug-in, when prompted for the location of the plug-in files, navigate to the new folder location (e.g. C:\temp ).

Note: As an alternative, reinstallation can be accomplished by using the download files from the original download location after removing the plug-in.

 

Protected Services

This is a list of all services protected by this plug-in. Please note that where a plug-in supports multiple vendor versions, some services may not be present in a particular version.

The McAfee GroupShield/Security for Exchange services are monitored and controlled by the plug-in. When the plug-in is installed, all protected services will be set to 'Manual' unless otherwise stated.

The following services compose the McAfee Security for Microsoft Exchange application:

  • McAfee Framework Service (McAfeeFramework)
  • McAfee Anti-Spam Rules Updater (MaseRulesUpdater)
  • McAfee Sercurity for Microsoft Exchange (MSME)
  • McAfee Security for Microsoft Exchange Replication Service (MSMEReplicationService)

The following services compose the McAfee GroupShield for Exchange anti-virus application:

  • McAfee Framework Service (McAfeeFramework)
  • McAfee GroupShield
  • McAfee Streaming Updates (McAfeeStreamingUpdates)
  • Anti-Spam Rules Updater

 

Protected Data

This is a description of the protected data set that was determined when the plug-in was installed. Please note that exact filters will be based on the configuration of the application plug-in during installation.

The plug-in for McAfee GroupShield for Exchange will protect the default file locations and automatically update the file filter when the items listed below are changed to a custom location:

  • Settings & Diagnostics > Diagnostics > Debug Logging > Debug File Location
  • Settings & Diagnostics > Detected Items > Database Location

Additionally, the Plug-in for McAfee GroupShield for Exchange will create a static inclusion file filter for the following location:

Settings & Diagnostics > Diagnostics > Product Log > Database Location

This location is by default <InstallPath>\Data Location. If the data location is changed by the user, a new inclusion file filter must be manually created to protect the new location.

To create a new inclusion file filter, follow the steps below:

  1. Launch the Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client.
  2. Select the Data: File Filters tab.
  3. Click on Add Inclusion filter .
  4. Navigate to the desired location.
  5. Click OK .

  • None

 

Unsupported Components and Features

The plug-in does not protect the following application features or components:

  • The DAT Files (virus definitions) are not replicated because of the potential presence of McAfee(R) VirusScan(R) Enterprise (File Level Anti Virus product). A management IP on the passive server will be required to enable these updates to take place. Please consult the product’s ReadMe.txt file for installation instructions.
  • McAfee File Level components or services.
