Prior to upgrading a protected application with Neverfail Heartbeat installed, check the Neverfail Extranet for a newer version of the applicable plug-in and verify that the plug-in supports the new application version or Service Pack. To upgrade a protected application with Neverfail Heartbeat installed, perform the following steps:

On the Primary (active) Server

  1. Uninstall existing version of the Neverfail plug-in for the protected application using the procedure in Knowledgebase article #1420 - How to Uninstall Neverfail AM(X)s and Plug-ins in Neverfail Heartbeat V5.3.0 and Later .
    1. Wait for the plug-in to completely uninstall and remove all protection.
    2. Check the Neverfail Application event log event to ensure this process has completed on the passive server.
  2. Install the latest Neverfail plug-in for the specific protected application.
    1. Wait for the plug-in installation process to complete.
    2. Verify that all services and filters are added.

    2. The protected application will start.
    3. The protected application upgrade will resume.
  6. If the server was restarted at Step 5, shutdown Neverfail Heartbeat opting to leave the protected application running. If the server was not restarted, continue to Step 7.

  8. Once complete, start the the protected application services.

NOTE: If upgrading Blackberry Enterprise Server with remote SQL database, the protected applica tion services have to be stopped while Secondary server is being upgraded (as Secondary server will attempt to access the same database during the upgrade).

On Secondary (passive) Server

NOTE: Use identical protected application Setup program upgrade parameters on both servers.

NOTE:

For upgrades of BlackBerry Enterprise Server with remote database or if the upgrade requires domain connectivity, add a temporary Management IP address to the Principal (Public) NIC. This is required for SQL and/or LDAP connectivity. The Management IP address must be in the same subnet as the Principal (Public) IP address. For information about how to add a Management IP address, see Knowledgebase article #208 - How to Configure Management IP Addressing and Routing with Neverfail Heartbeat

If the Blackberry database is local, using the Service Control Manager, start SQL Server service to allow connection to the BlackBerry Configuration Database.

  1. Upgrade the protected application by running Setup.exe .
  2. Restart the server if required.
    1. The server will return as passive with Neverfail Heartbeat in the stated state.
    2. The protected application services will be stopped.
    3. The protected application upgrade will resume.
  3. If server was restarted at Step 2, stop Neverfail Heartbeat.
  4. If upgrading BlackBerry Enterprise Server, using the Service Control Manager, start the SQL Server service.
  5. Allow the protected application upgrade to complete.

NOTE: Do not start protected application services when the upgrade has completed.

6. If upgrading BlackBerry Enterprise Server, remove the temporary Backdoor IP address from the Public NIC. Otherwise, go to the next step.

Finalize Installation and Synchronize Heartbeat

  1. On Secondary (passive) server, start Neverfail Heartbeat.
  2. On Primary (active) server, start Neverfail Heartbeat.
