Supporting Documentation

Technical documents supporting this version of Neverfail vAppHA for Hyper-V:

Configuration

Hyper-V Hosts

Must be enabled for remote management.  A configuration utility (HVRemote) is available from MSDN to simplify remote management (linked below).

Hyper-V Adaptor

This plug-in provides a set of availability checks and rule actions for the Microsoft Hyper-V environment. To perform these checks, the Adaptor must be configured as follows:

  • A valid domain administrator username and password
  • Domain administrator must be added to the local administrator group on each Hyper-V host participating in the Microsoft Cluster
  • A target host name or IP address (this is the destination for the Live Migration)

Rule Actions

Rule actions are available to application plug-ins installed with vAppHA. When the rule action triggers, the event is logged in the Windows application log of the guest OS, and these events can be monitored from Virtual Machine Manager:

  • VMRestart
  • Live Migration
  • Live Migration and Restart Application

Standard service and rule actions also are available and applicable to vAppHA protected applications:

  • Recover Service
  • Restart Applications
  • Log Warning

If the HVAdaptor is not configured with username and password details, health checks and rule actions will fail and warnings and errors will be logged.

Live Migration Targets

Live migration targets identify a destination target host by the Hyper-V host name or the IP address. The target must be a member of the Cluster, and must support Live Migration.

Neverfail vAppHA Foundation

Neverfail vAppHA for Hyper-V provides the foundation for protecting any virtualized applications. A plug-in delivers service monitoring and performance monitoring of servers and applications. The following plug-ins are included in the Neverfail vAppHA for Hyper-V kit (V6-1-3407-x86\Plug-ins) and can be installed during Setup or post install using the Management Client:

  • System Plug-in
    • System Performance Monitoring Rules
  • IIS 6.0 and IIS 7.0
    • Web Site (URL) Availability Check
    • Web Site (URL) Response Time Check (in milliseconds)
  • Windows File Server 2003 and 2008
    • File Server Performance Monitoring

Neverfail vAppHA for Applications on Hyper-V

vAppHA can be deployed with any of the application plug-ins to provide protection for the virtualized applications and to deliver service monitoring and performance monitoring of server and application performance:
