How to Temporarily Disable the Neverfail Monitor for an Anti-Virus (or third-party application) on a server Group Protected by Neverfail Heartbeat v6.2 and Later

This Knowledgebase article provides information about how to disable service monitoring for an Anti-Virus (or a third-party) application on a server group protected by Neverfail Heartbeat.

More Information

Situations may arise where an unprotected third party application that runs on your Neverfail Heartbeat servers, may impact server performance and overall server activity.  Potentially, it may lock or keep files from the protected set open, which can cause the group to be 'out-of-sync'. Therefore, it may be necessary to disable monitoring of a service for Anti-Virus or third party applications to isolate or diagnose an issue.

Neverfail Heartbeat Monitoring

Neverfail Heartbeat monitors protected applications by automatically polling the component services of the protected applications identified at install time. This regular check on the state of each component service ensures the services are running correctly. If a component service is found to have failed, remedial actions can be taken -up to three consecutive failures for each service. The remedial actions on component service failure range from simply logging a warning to performing a switchover.

By default, these actions are set to Recover Service and can be changed using the Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client. The desired action can be set for each successive time the service is found to have failed.

When a third party application protected by Neverfail Heartbeat is disabled (not uninstalled), its services are stopped so Neverfail Heartbeat will consider that the services have failed and will attempt to recover the service. To avoid this, before disabling the application, you should configure the remedial actions to be taken by Neverfail Heartbeat when it finds a stopped protected service to be set to Log Warning for each failure.

To disable Neverfail Heartbeat Monitoring for all applications, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client on the active server (by going to Start > Programs > Neverfail > Manage Server .
  2. Select the Applications: Summary tab.
  3. Click Configure to invoke the Applications Configuration dialog.
  4. Select to Unprotect services and stop monitoring all applications (for manual application maintenance) .
  5. Click OK to save settings.

To disable Neverfail Heartbeat Monitoring for a specific application, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Neverfail Heartbeat Management Client on the active server (by going to Start > Programs > Neverfail > Manage Server .
  2. Select the Applications: Services tab.
  3. From the services listed under Services tab, select the specific service you want to disable. Click on the Edit button and for each of the three actions to be taken at failure, choose Log Warning from the drop-down list.
  4. Click OK to save the settings.

The third party application can now be disabled (disable the service or a stop the service) and the Neverfail Heartbeat Application Monitoring will not restart it. When re-enabling the application, make sure that the remedial actions are set back to Recover Service (or any suitable action such as changing its service status back to manual).
