This Knowledge Base article provides the procedure to install and protect View Composer 1.1, 2.0, or 2.5 after vCenter Server Heartbeat has been installed.

To install VMware View Composer after vCenter Server Heartbeat has been installed, follow the procedure below.

Procedure

Download the View Composer installer and copy it to the intended location on both the Primary and Secondary servers.

On the Primary/active Server

Note: If the Secondary server is the active server, please omit step 1 below.

  1. Using the vCenter Server Heartbeat Console, perform a switchover and wait for Secondary server to become active.
  2. Shutdown vCenter Server Heartbeat leaving the protected application running on Secondary (active) server.

On the Secondary Server

  1. Run View Composer installer and record all configuration settings used (Install Path, ODBC connection details and database information, and SOAP port).
  2. If the installation on the Secondary server fails, research the cause of the installation failure. If the issue can be resolved then it is safe to proceed.
  3. Using the Service Control Manager, stop the View Composer services (Vmware View Composer and VMware Universal File Access).
  4. Change the server role to Secondary/passive:
    1. Launch the Configure Server wizard and select the Machine tab. Change the Current role to Secondary/passive.
    2. Using the Service Control Manager, start Neverfail Server R2 service.
    3. Wait until all protected services are stopped.
    4. Using the Service Control Manager, stop Neverfail Server R2 service.

On the Primary Server (Assuming a successful upgrade of Secondary completed)

  1. Change the server role to Primary/active:
    1. Launch the Configure Server wizard and select the Machine tab. Change the Current role to Primary/active.
    2. Using the Service Control Manager, start Neverfail Server R2 service.
    3. Wait until all protected services are started.
    4. Using the Service Control Manager, stop Neverfail Server R2 service.
  2. Run View Composer installer and use same configuration settings used for installation on the Secondary server.
  3. Start vCenter Server Heartbeat on both the Primary and Secondary servers.
  4. Launch the vCenter Server Heartbeat Console and check that the system completes the Full System Check.
  5. Navigate to Application: Plug-ins and click Install .
  6. Click Browse and navigate to <unzipped_folder>\<vCenterServerHeartbeatVersion-platform>\plugins\ViewComposer

    Note: This folder is created by default in a temporary location when vCenter Server Heartbeat Setup.exe is run and is deleted when the setup is closed.
  7. Use either option a or b below:
    1. Using the Setup WinZip Self-extractor file.
      1. Start Setup.exe by clicking Setup in the WinZip Self-extractor window.
      2. Once the process is complete navigate to the extraction location.

        For windows 2003: C:\Documents and Settings\<current_user>\Local Settings\Temp\<.TMP_folder

        or

        For windows 2008: C:\Users\<current_user>\AppData\Local\Temp\<.TMP_folder>
    2. Extract the plug-in from the vCenter Server Heartbeat kit to a convenient location and install it from there.
  8. Select the ViewComposerNFPlugin.dll file , and then click OK to complete the installation.
  9. Add manual inclusion file filters for:

    On Windows 2003

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys\**

C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware View Composer\SviConfig.exe.config

C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware View Composer\SviWebService.exe.config

On Windows 2008

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys\**

C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware View Composer\SviConfig.exe.config

C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware View Composer\SviWebService.exe.config

  1. Using the Registry Editor, export the registry: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\HTTP to a file named file1.reg .
  2. Copy the  exported file1.reg file to a known location on the Secondary Server

On the Secondary /passive Server

  1. Browse to the location of file1.reg and import it by double-clicking on the file or from a command prompt type REG IMPORT <FileName> .
