Follow

Summary

This Knowledge Base article provides information on how to restart a Secondary server running EVault Remote Disaster Recovery.

More Information

When restarting a server running EVault Remote Disaster Recovery, it is important to follow the i365 recommended procedure to prevent an 'Unclean' shutdown of EVault Remote Disaster Recovery, which may result in some data loss.

The following procedure assumes that the EVault Remote Disaster Recovery server pair is running with the Primary server as active and the Secondary server as passive.

Procedure

To restart the Secondary (passive) server, follow the steps below:

  1. Stop EVault Remote Disaster Recovery on Secondary (passive) server. To do this:
    1. Launch the EVault Remote Disaster Recovery Management Client, by right-clicking the EVault Remote Disaster Recovery system tray icon and selecting Manage Server , or by selecting the same option from Start > All Programs > EVault .
    2. Select the server pair you wish to manage and click Open .
    3. On the Server: Summary page, check that the File System Status and Registry Status are both shown as 'Synchronized', and then click Shutdown .
    4. At this point select both the Primary and Secondary server option and select Do not stop protected applications . This will leave the protected applications running on the active server as EVault Remote Disaster Recovery exits on both servers.
  2. Ensure the EVault Remote Disaster Recovery service is set to Automatic , from within the Windows Services Management Console and check the settings are correct in the EVault Remote Disaster Recovery configuration. To do this:
    1. Right-click the EVault Remote Disaster Recovery system tray icon and select Server Configuration wizard.
    2. From the Machine tab, verify that Primary is selected as the Active Server . (This should already be the case if the server was passive before stopping EVault Remote Disaster Recovery).
    3. Click Finish .

Note: On Windows Server 2008, if any applications are running, you will be prompted to shutdown the application before shutting down or restarting Windows Server 2008.
  3. Restart Microsoft Windows as normal from the Start button.
  4. Following the restart, ensure that the appropriate protected services are NOT started.
  5. On the Primary (active) server, start EVault Remote Disaster Recovery. Right-click the EVault Remote Disaster Recovery system tray icon and select Start EVault Remote Disaster Recovery .
  6. Select the server pair and check that the servers have connected and started replication. To do this:
    3. On the Server: Summary page, check that the File System Status and Registry Status are both replicating and the direction is from Primary (active) to Secondary (passive). The Registry Status should quickly display as 'Synchronized'. The File System Status may take much longer depending on the amount of protected data.
  7. Close the EVault Remote Disaster Recovery Management Client by selecting File > Exit , and following the on screen prompts.
