Changing the Neverfail Heartbeat Service SMTP Port

Follow

Summary

This Knowledgebase article provides the procedure to change the standard Neverfail Heartbeat service SMTP port to use a different port number.

More Information

Neverfail Heartbeat sends alert messages using SMTP via TCP port 25 by default. The SMTP TCP port can be configured to use a custom port using the procedure below.

Procedure

  1. Shut down the Neverfail Heartbeat service.
  2. Launch Regedit.
  3. Navigate to the following registry value: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NFServerR2\Parameters\AppParameters
  4. Edit the existing entry AppParameters to add the following suffix: -Dmail.smtp.port=30 (replacing “30” with the custom port number).

Note: The separator used between the first and second arguments is a TAB ( Ctrl-I ). To create the TAB space:
    1. Copy the default entry from AppParameters ( -Xmx512M ) to a new NOTEPAD document.
    2. Press the tab key and then insert the needed custom suffix ( -Dmail.smtp.port=30 ).
    3. Copy the newly created string back into the registry.
    4. Commit the changes.

  5. Restart the Neverfail Heartbeat service.
  6. This procedure should be repeated on all nodes of a cluster: the Secondary and Tertiary if relevant.
  7. Test the new settings.
