SolarWinds - How to Configure Controlled Shutdown on Windows 2003 Server

This knowledgebase article provides instructions on configuring Controlled Shutdown on servers running on Windows Server 2003.

More Information

The ability to configure the length of time for servers to wait for Controlled Shutdown is not configurable on Windows Server 2003 via the SolarWinds Failover Engine Manager and must be configured via the registry. Enabling this feature via the SolarWinds Failover Engine Manager will display the following warning: The following error occurred during "Replication Configuration" operation: Controlled shutdown timeout not configurable on Win2k3"

and the Maximum Time To Shutdown value cannot be configured.

Controlled Shutdown can be configured manually, using the Registry Editor, by following these steps:
  1. Open Registry Editor.
  2. Navigate to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control .
  3. Set the desired value for WaitToKillServiceTimeout in milliseconds (e.g. for 10 minutes, enter 600000).
  4. Close Registry Editor and restart the server.

Note: the procedure above must be applied to both servers in the pair since either can be active.
