SolarWinds - Changing the SolarWinds Failover Engine Service SMTP Port

This Knowledge base article provides the procedure to change the standard SolarWinds Failover Engine service SMTP port to use a different port number.

More Information

SolarWinds Failover Engine sends alert messages using SMTP via TCP port 25 by default. The SMTP TCP port can be configured to use a custom port using the procedure below.

  1. Shut down the SolarWinds Failover Engine service.
  2. Launch Regedit.
  3. Navigate to the following registry value: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NFServerR2\Parameters\AppParameters
  4. Edit the existing entry AppParameters to add the following suffix: -Dmail.smtp.port=30 (replacing “30” with the custom port number).

Note: The separator used between the first and second arguments is a TAB ( Ctrl-I ). To create the TAB space:
    1. Copy the default entry from AppParameters ( -Xmx512M ) to a new NOTEPAD document.
    2. Press the tab key and then insert the needed custom suffix ( -Dmail.smtp.port=30 ).
    3. Copy the newly created string back into the registry.
    4. Commit the changes.
  5. Restart the SolarWinds Failover Engine service.
  6. This procedure should be repeated on both servers in the pair.
  7. Test the new settings.
