More Information

A Business Service is an empty container that is populated with multiple entities for the purpose of grouping them. For example, if the Finance department used an accounting application to manage Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, and General Ledger, and that application depended on a SQL server running on a virtual machine, the user could group all of the entities (Finance applications, SQL Server, virtual machines, and host machines, as members of a single group called Finance Apps as a Business Service.

Each Business Service is then assigned one of the four Protection Tiers. A Protection Tier defines policy in terms of required protection levels and associated Service Level Agreements (SLAs) over those protection levels. Architect can automatically propagate protection tiers over direct and indirect relationships as established through dependency analysis.

Business Services Page

The Business Services page provides you the ability to see the current state and status of all configured Business Services in a single pane and add additional Business Services using either the Business Services Wizard or manually.

The Business Services page displays the following information for each Business Service:

Name – Displays the name of the Business Service.

Analysis State – The overall analysis state of the Business Service based upon a roll-up of the Business Service's members.

Status Green Green The Business Service is fully Analyzed.
Status Amber Amber At least one member was discovered and needs to be processed, is queued for analysis, or if a Business Service, multiple entities within the Business Service have amber states.
Status Red Red Analysis is blocked for at least one member.

Availability State – Displays the overall availability of the Business Service as a roll-up of each member's availability state and displays as online (green), at risk (amber) or offline (red).

Status Green Green Displays as green if all entities within the Business Service are green (online).
Status Amber Amber Displays as amber if one or more of the Business Services entities indirect members are red (offline) or one or more direct members are amber (at risk).
Status Red Red Displays as red if all of the Business Service entities are red (offline) or if one or more of the Business Services entities direct members are red (offline).

Protection Tier – Identifies the assigned Protection Tier.

RTO – Displays the current likelihood of the Business Service achieving the configured Recovery Time Objective (RTO) based upon Architect's subsequent monitoring.

RPO – The RPO displays the likelihood of the Business Service achieving the configured Recovery Point Objective (RPO) based on Architect’s subsequent monitoring.

AVL – Displays the current ability to meet the Business Service's Availability SLA based upon historical monitoring.

Amber Amber At least one indirect member of the Business Service experienced an SLA breach over the configured monitoring window.

Not assigned or incomplete data Gray Sufficient monitoring has not yet taken place to allow evaluation of the Availability SLA.

Dependency – Identifies the number of dependencies (both direct and indirect) within the Business Service.

Note: To view additional information about a specific Business Service, double-click the Business Service name to drill-down into the Business Service. Additionally, the Business Service page provides the Business Service Wizard button to invoke the Business Service wizard for creating new Business Services.

The Business Service detail page displays a single pane providing detailed information about a specific Business Service.

Protection Status pane - The Protection Status pane provides a snapshot view of the current status of the Business Service.

Analysis - The Analysis pane displays the Analysis status of the Business Service entity analysis as a roll-up of the Analysis status of all its members. An associated rationale for the status is provided.

Protection Tier - The Protection Tier pane displays the currently assigned Protection Tier for the Business Service. Additionally, it provides information about the current status of the Business Service's ability to meet the configured Service Level Agreement (SLA).

Target The currently configured RTO, RPO, and Availability (AVL) parameters of the SLA for the assigned tier.
Predicted The predicted ability to meet the target SLA based upon heuristic modeling and comparison with the target SLAs.
Actual The actual ability to meet the target SLA based upon historical monitoring recovery time, recovery point, and availability.

This matrix uses the following values to automatically rate the Target, Predicted, and Actual values for RTO, RPO, and AVL of the Business Service based upon configured and detected values.

Protection - The Protection pane displays the Protection Level status of the Business Service and rates both the Target and Predicted for each Protection Level as indicated below:

Dependencies - The Dependencies pane allows you to view all dependencies within the Business Services. Neverfail Architect classifies dependencies as either indirect or direct.

Dependency Types
Type Description
Indirect A dependency identified during discovery.
Direct A dependency manually assigned by the user.

Dependency Pane

To manually add a Dependency:

  1. Click the Add Dependencies button to view a list of all discovered entities.
  2. Select the check box to the left of a specific dependency to add it to the Business Service.
  3. Click the Add icon to add the dependency to the Business Service.
  4. Click OK .

More Actions

Use the More Actions drop-down to Remove , Show Hidden , or Unhide an entity within the Business Server.

To assign a Tier to a specific Entity:

  1. Select the check box to the left of the entity name to identify the intended entity.
  2. Click the Add to Tier button.
  3. Select the appropriate Tier to assign.
  4. Click OK .
  5. When prompted, select to automatically propagate up or down to assign the same Tier to dependent and dependee entities.
  6. Click OK .

Attributes

The Attributes pane displays the Business Service components by type and numbers. The following attribute types are displayed.

Direct Membership Types

Type Description
Applications The total number of applications that are a direct member of the Business Service.
Physical Computers The total number of physical computers that are a direct member of the Business Service.
Virtual Computers The total number of virtual computers that are a direct member of the Business Service.
Hypervisors The total number of hypervisors that are a direct member of the Business Service.

Indirect Membership Types

Type Description
Applications The total number of Applications that are members of this Business Service (both direct and indirect) after following automatically detected dependency relationships.
Physical Computers The total number of physical computers that are required to support all direct and indirect Application members of this Business Service.
Virtual Computers The total number of virtual computers that are required to support all direct and indirect Application members of this Business Service.
Hypervisors The total number of hypervisors that are required to support all virtual computer members (both direct and indirect) of this Business Service.
Networks The total number of networks that the infrastructure associated with this Business Service spans which all dependency relations are taken into consideration.

Dependency Graph

The 360° Flare Dependency Graph displays the dependencies for the given entity following all dependency relationship types (both direct and indirect and both master and slave). This graph compliments the "top down" view provided by the dependency table and the "bottom-up" view provided by the Heatmap. A reduced rendering of the Dependency Graph is displayed on the Business Service Detail page which can be enlarged by double-clicking the image. The data represented in the Dependency Graph can be exported to a .csv file by clicking the Export Dependencies button. Dependency Types
Type Description
Indirect A dependency automatically detected by Architect.
Direct A dependency manually assigned by the user.
Master An entity that controls another entity.
Slave An entity that is controlled by another entity.

The Dependency Graph shows all dependency relationships for the given entity starting at the given entity and moving recursively to follow the dependencies (for example, following master > slave or slave > master).

The Dependency Graph incorporates the following key features allowing you to easily follow dependencies:

  • Initially, all dependency connections (Master->Slave and Slave->Master) are shown with a blue color.
    Note: When you click on the whitespace on the graph, the color scheme and content is reverted to the initial colors.
  • Hovering over individual entities in the graph results in the following color changes:
    • The entity being hovered over is highlighted.
    • The first level of Master->Slave dependencies and the entity at the end of the first level dependency are shown as green with all next-level dependencies remaining blue.
    • The first level of Slave->Master dependencies and the entity at the end of the first level dependency are shown as red with all next-level dependencies remaining blue.
  • Hovering over a high-lighted red/blue link results in a pop-up dialog providing details about the
    nature of the link as follows:

  • Clicking once on an entity results in only Master->Slave dependencies being displayed (preserving the above behaviors).
  • Clicking twice on an entity results in only Slave-> dependencies being displayed (preserving the above behaviors).
  • Clicking a third time returns you to the first-click behavior.
