More Information

Backup Mode:

Neverfail recommends using Forward Incremental Backup with Synthetic Full Backup or Forward Incremental Backup with Active Full Backup for best performance.

Of these 2 options, Synthetic Full Backup provides an additional advantage over Active Full Backup which in some situations may be prevented from running active full backups periodically and therefore may not be an option. Synthetic Full backup synthesizes a full backup from data already on backup repository and reduce interaction with backup source.

Forward Incremental Backup with Synthetic Full Backup

The synthetic full backup is identical to a regular full backup. The synthetic full backup is a .vbk file that contains the data of the complete VM. The difference between these two backup types lies in the way how VM data is retrieved.

Note: In this example, the .vib created on Friday got merged into the Friday’s .vbk file and was deleted.

To create a Forward Incremental Backup with Synthetic Full Backup job on Veeam, In the Advanced Settings dialog select Incremental and then select Synthetic Full Backup .

Forward Incremental Backup with Active Full Backup

The forward incremental backup method produces a backup chain that consists of the first full backup and a set of forward incremental backups following it. Additionally, the forward incremental backup chain contains synthetic full and/or active full backups that “split” the backup chain into shorter series.

Veeam Backup & Replication will remove the full backup chain only after the last increment in the chain meets your retention policy (which will happen once the retention policy reaches the next full backup).

To create a Forward Incremental Backup with an Active Full Backup job on Veeam, In Advanced Settings select Incremental and then select Active Full Backup.
