How to Perform a Single Node Upgrade to Neverfail Continuity Engine

Summary

This Knowledgebase article provides the procedure to perform a single node upgrade in the event that an attempt to upgrade a pair/trio fails leaving a single node that was not upgraded.

More Information

When performing an upgrade, should the upgrade of servers fail leaving a single node that was not successfully upgraded, perform the following procedure to add a Management IP address to the server and perform a single node upgrade.

 

From Neverfail IT Continuity Engine v7.1(or higher) to any of the following (were applicable):

  • Neverfail IT Continuity Engine v7.1.2 (or higher)
  • Neverfail Continuity Engine v8.1 (or higher) 

For Neverfail Engine v7.x or v8.x with any OS except Windows Server 2008 R2 SP0:

Add a Management IP address to the Secondary/Tertiary Neverfail Engine server that failed to upgrade.

Perform the following steps: 

  1. Navigate to MS Windows -> Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center.
  2. Click on Change Adapter Settings.
  3. Right-click the intended Network Interface Card (NIC) and select Properties.
  4. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and then click Properties.
  5. Click Advanced.
  6. Click Add to display the TCP/IP Address dialog. 
  7. Enter the Management IP address (in the same subnet as the Public IP address) and subnet mask.
  8. Click Add.
  9. Click OK -> OK -> Close.
  10. Perform a Single Node Upgrade.
    1. Launch the Neverfail Engine Management Service (EMS).
    2. Add the cluster in EMS if not already present.
    3. Select the cluster and navigate to Manage -> Deploy -> Upgrade the selected server.
    4. Add the built-in administrator account.
    5. Select the I confirm that no users are logged on to the P/S/T server.
    6. Select the Upgrade only a specific server in the cluster option.
    7. Add the Management IP and click Next.
    8. After validation, click Finish to perform the single node upgrade. 

When the Operating System is Windows Server 2008 R2 SP0 without Hotfix (2386184):

Add a Management IP address to the Secondary/Tertiary Neverfail Engine server running on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP0 that failed to upgrade.  

  1. Download the cloak.zip file, extract it, and copy it to the <%neverfail_install_location%>\R2\bin folder.
  2. Open a command window and navigate to the <%neverfail_install_location%>\R2\bin folder.
  3. Enter the following command:
         cloak.exe install
  4. Navigate to MS Windows -> Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center.
  5. Click on Change Adapter Settings.
  6. Right-click the intended Network Interface Card (NIC) and select Properties.
  7. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and then click Properties.
  8. Click Advanced.
  9. Click Add to display the TCP/IP Address dialog.
  10. Enter the Management IP address and subnet mask.
  11. Click Add.
  12. Click OK -> OK -> Close.
  13. Perform a Single Node Upgrade.
    1. Launch the Neverfail Engine Management Service (EMS).
    2. Add the cluster in EMS if not already present.
    3. Select the cluster and navigate to Manage -> Deploy -> Upgrade the selected server.
    4. Add the built-in administrator account.
    5. Select the I confirm that no users are logged on to the P/S/T server.
    6. Select the Upgrade only a specific server in the cluster option.
    7. Add the Management IP and click Next.
    8. After validation, click Finish to perform the single node upgrade. 

  

From Neverfail IT Continuity Engine v7.0 to any of the following:

  • Neverfail IT Continuity Engine v7.1.2 (or higher)
  • Neverfail Continuity Engine v8.1 (or higher) 

 For Neverfail IT Continuity Engine v7.0 with any OS except Windows Server 2008 R2 SP0: 

Add a Management IP address to the Secondary/Tertiary Neverfail Engine server that failed to upgrade.

Perform the following steps: 

    1. Open a command window.
    2. To add a Management IP address, enter the following command:
              netsh interface ipv4 add address <adapterName> <ip> <mask> skipassource=true
    3. The Management IP address is added to the server.
  • Perform a Single Node Upgrade.
  1. Launch the Neverfail Engine Management Service (EMS).
  2. Add the cluster in EMS if not already present.
  3. Select the cluster and navigate to Manage -> Deploy -> Upgrade the selected server.
  4. Add the built-in administrator account.
  5. Select the I confirm that no users are logged on to the P/S/T server.
  6. Select the Upgrade only a specific server in the cluster option.
  7. Add the Management IP and click Next.
  8. After validation, click Finish to perform the single node upgrade.

When the Operating System is Windows Server 2008 R2 SP0 without Hotfix (2386184):

Add a Management IP address to the Secondary/Tertiary Neverfail Engine server running on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP0 that failed to upgrade.

From Neverfail Heartbeat v6.7 to any of the following:

  • Neverfail IT Continuity Engine v8.0
  • Neverfail Continuity Engine v8.1 (or higher

For Neverfail Heartbeat v6.7[.n] with any supported OS except Windows Server 2008 R2 SP0: 

Add a Management IP address to the Secondary/Tertiary Neverfail Heartbeat server that failed to upgrade.

Perform the following steps: 

    1. Open a command window.
    2. To add a Management IP address, enter the following command:
              netsh interface ipv4 add address <adapterName> <ip> <mask> skipassource=true
    3. The Management IP address is added to the server.
  • Ensure the nfserverr2 service is stopped on the passive node prior to starting the upgrade if the Fileserver plug-in is installed.
  • Ensure that the lanmanserver service is started on the node prior to starting the upgrade.
  1. Perform a Single Node Upgrade.
    1. Launch the Neverfail Engine Management Service (EMS).
    2. Add the cluster in EMS if not already present.
    3. Select the cluster and navigate to Manage -> Deploy -> Upgrade the selected server.
    4. Add the built-in administrator account.
    5. Select the I confirm that no users are logged on to the P/S/T server.
    6. Select the Upgrade only a specific server in the cluster option.
    7. Add the Management IP and click Next.
    8. After validation, click Finish to perform the single node upgrade.

    7. Add the Management IP and click Next.
    8. After validation, click Finish to perform the single node upgrade.
