How to upgrade Neverfail Engine version 8.5 Update 3 (or older versions) to a current/supported Neverfail Engine version

Summary

This knowledge base article provides the procedure for upgrading Neverfail Continuity Engine version 8.5 Update 3 (and older versions) to version 9.0.

More Information

Starting with Engine 8.5 Update 4 the Neverfail System Monitor Plugin replicates all the local user accounts data and permissions. When older Engine versions are used, if the local accounts/passwords are only updated on the Active server, those local settings will be out of sync and this could cause a failure for the Engine upgrade process on the Passive server(s).

In order to avoid upgrade problems for the Passive(s) servers, you can use the following procedure which first requires the Neverfail System Monitor Plugin to be upgraded so that the user accounts are replicated to the Passive server(s) and then upgrade Engine itself to version 9.0.

Procedure

1. Download the Neverfail Continuity Engine version 9.0 from the link below and run the .msi installer on the machine hosting your Neverfail Engine Management Server web console. This will do an in-place upgrade of your existing (older) EMS web console.

2. Once the EMS web console has been upgrade to version 9.0 go to C:\Programdata\Neverfail\VAD\catalog\plugins folder and copy the SystemMonitorNFPlugin.401.x.x.x zip file to the Active server in your Neverfail cluster (pair/trio). Unzip the .dll file from that .zip archive.

3. Also on the Active server, open the Neverfail Advanced Management Client and from Applications -> Plug-ins section select the System Plugin, click on Uninstall and then Yes.

4. In the Advanced Management Client on the Active server open again the Applications -> Plug-ins tab and this time click on Install and browse for the System Plugin .dll that was unzipped at step 2.

5. Confirm that the new System Plugin is installed (it will show in the Plugins list after a few seconds).

6. Reboot the Passive server. This will make Windows load all recent data for user accounts, data which was replicated and synchronized by Neverfail when the new System Plugin has been installed (step 5).

7. After the Passive is reconnected to the cluster, wait for the Full System Check to finish and once the servers are back in sync, you can follow the normal upgrade procedure to upgrade Engine on all nodes from the EMS web console with the Upgrade option.
